UPDF Recovers Firearm Stolen from UWA

“Our forces from Napumpum detachment recovered the gun at 11:50 hours on 18 July, 2020 at the home of Lokan Lokameri who is at large. We are tracing his whereabouts,” said Maj. Mugisa in a statement on Monday.

Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF has recovered a firearm that was stolen by suspected Karimojong Warriors during an attack on the Uganda Wildlife Authority-UWA detachment in Moru-Alokwangat in Kotido District.

The firearm registration number UWA SMG 3932_1999 was recovered from the house of Lopan Lokameri, a resident of North village in Loposa parish in Kotido district.

According to the UPDF 3rd Division Spokesperson, Maj. Peter Mugisa, says the suspect is still at large. He says the gun was recovered following a tip off by residents. 

“Our forces from Napumpum detachment recovered the gun at 11:50 hours on 18 July, 2020 at the home of Lokan Lokameri who is at large. We are tracing his whereabouts,” said Maj. Mugisa in a statement on Monday.  

On May 19th, 2020, suspected Karimojong warriors raided UWA detachment and stole three guns and unspecified rounds of ammunition. 

Wilbrado Ediau Ecodu, the Game Warden Matheniko –Bokora Wildlife Reserve, confirmed the recovery of the firearm. 

He says all the three guns have now been recovered from warriors in Kotido district.

He said several suspects have been arrested in connection to the May 19th attack and are being lined up to face the military court martial. 

"The UPDF has done a wonderful job. Dozens have been arrested and they are being screened. Once that is done, they will appear before the court martial," said Ecodu in an interview on Monday.     

Karimojong warriors have continued stealing cattle across the region. Last week, at least dozen of were killed in a gun fire exchange with UPDF. In Kaabong, 3 were shot dead on Saturday morning according to witnesses.  

The UPDF 3rd Division Spokesperson, Maj. Peter Mugisa, says one warrior was killed in Magoro Sub County on Friday, 2 in Nakapiripirit in Kobion areas and 2 in Abim district last week. 

Dozens were arrested while stealing cattle in Napak, Amudat, Nakapiripirit and Kaabong.
