A UPDF soldier on Thursday night shot and injured a colleague before committing suicide at a detachment in Moroto district. The incident happened in Kidepo village, Rupa Sub County, 10 kilometres West of Moroto town.

Lance Corporal Micheal Kilama shot himself dead after injuring Rasul Yakin Auger at around 9.00pm following a brief disagreement over shillings 20,000 debt.

The deceased had allegedly borrowed the money from Auger several months ago which he failed to pay.

When contacted Lt. Jimmy Omara, the 3rd Division spokesperson confirmed the incident describing it as regrettable. He adds that the Auger is admitted at Moroto Army Hospital. He says such a case would have been presented to the commanders for action. He however, notes that the injured soldier is out of danger after the bullet hit his left leg. He goes on to say that the deceased reportedly placed a gun under his chin and shattered his own head.

Omara says Kilama’s body is lying in Moroto Army barracks mortuary as the army investigates the matter.

The UPDF has been struggling to contain cases of errant soldiers who turn guns on their colleagues or on unarmed civilians.

In March this year, Private Patrick Okot Odoch, then attached to Bombo Military Barracks killed 10 people including his colleagues while they were at a local bar. He was later sentenced to serve 90 years in jail.

In March 2010, Private Joseph Tembo shot dead Corporal Micheal Oucha and Private Lawrence Maswagi at Moroto barracks.

Also in the same year, Corporal John Ouma shot dead Lance corporal Denis Aule at Mogosi detachment in Moroto district.

In 2012 Private Benon Tumuramwe shot his superior Lt Charles Lowenya dead during a cordon and search operation in Nakapiripirit district. Ends
