UPDF Soldier Survives Lynching Over Theft

A mob descended on the soldier and beat him into coma.
Corporal Derrick Komakech, a UPDF soldier attached to 5th Division in Pader has narrowly survived lynching for alleged theft. Komakech got himself in trouble on Tuesday after he allegedly stole a mattress and bed sheets belonging to Florence Acan, a resident of Lagwia Zone A in Pader town council. Acan reportedly made an alarm that attracted residents who immediately started chasing the culprit.

Komakech fell in an open pit latrine and was pulled out by residents. A mob descended on the soldier and beat him into coma. It took the intervention of police to rescue Komakech from being lynched. Komakech was rushed to hospital for treatment. John Ludwa, the officer in charge of Pader Town Council police outpost says Komakech will face charges of housebreaking and theft.  Komakech is also allegedly wanted by the army for desertion. 

Ludwa says they will hand over the military fatigue recovered from the suspect to the division headquarters based in Acholi Pii barracks.  Hecautioned residents and local leaders to be vigilant in identifying criminals within the area. Komakech who deserted army in April this year says he was forced to steal for survival after his name disappeared from payroll.
