New life has been breathed into the construction of a synthetic Astroturf hockey pitch at Lugogo Stadium.
Kenneth Kato, the publicity secretary of the Uganda Hockey Association, says 42 million shillings has been raised from well wishers and partner associations to complete the construction of the pitch. He says the Uganda Hockey Association has already paid 16 million shillings to Agoli Investments to resume work.
The construction will start as soon as the rainy season ends. Kato is confident that the new Astroturf pitch will be ready by the end of the year.
The synthetic turf is a donation from Olympic Solidarity and the International Hockey Federation. The Uganda Hockey Association was charged with raising 370 million shillings to level the pitch, build proper drainage and clear taxes for the Astroturf.
The Government of Uganda has offered to waive the taxes on the imports the imports when they arrive in the country later this year.
Ugandan hockey players endured a dormant season last year because of the lack of a national pitch. Training sessions for the national team were held on the Lugogo Cricket Oval and two small tournaments were held at Kings College Budo and Makerere University Business School.
