Fort Portal City authorities have halted the collection of daily dues from vendors operating in the city.

According to the Fort Portal City Mayor Edison Asaba, the daily dues being paid by the vendors are a form of extortion meant to frustrate the marginalized city dwellers from growing their small scale businesses.

Ruyonga says that they conducted a survey in the city and found out that small-scale business proprietors are paying daily exorbitant taxes whereas people with big businesses are paying a smaller amount.

For instance, a matooke vendor was paying more than 1 Million Shillings each year compared to other big businesses that pay less than 500,000 Shillings a year.

According to Ruyonga, they plan to design a specific amount of money, which will be, paid in form of licenses. Among the category of vendors who have been excused from paying the daily dues, include street food vendors, vegetable sellers, and matooke vendors among others.
