Rainstorm Devastates Oyam Primary School

The storm blew the roofs of six classroom occupied by more than 1,010 pupils. It also affected the school store and a teacher’s house. Minakulu Primary School is one of the most populated schools in Lango with 2,366 pupils. John Gutenberg Ogwang, the Minakulu Sub county LC 3 chairperson says leaders from areas affected by the disaster held a meeting on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the natural disaster.
About 1000 of pupils of Minakulu Primary School in Oyam district are studying under trees following a heavy storm on Monday that blew off the roofs of their classrooms.

   

The storm blew the roofs of six classroom occupied by more than 1,010 pupils. It also affected the school store and a teacher’s house. Minakulu Primary School is one of the most populated schools in Lango with 2,366 pupils.  

Sirius Okori, the school head teacher says the storm affected two streams in P.3, P.5 and another in P.6. Okori says the destruction affected half of the school population forcing them to conduct lessons under trees.        

John Gutenberg Ogwang, the Minakulu Sub county LC 3 chairperson says leaders from areas affected by the disaster held a meeting on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the natural disaster.  

He says they resolved to petition Minakulu sub county council for financial assistance to help rebuild the damaged learning infrastructure.  

Francis Okello, the Oyam District Education Officer told URN that he learned of the unfortunate disaster. 

He says his office will assess the extent of the damage with the view of getting the Ministry of Education and Sports or that or disaster intervenes to allow pupils conclude the term successfully.

Oyam LC V Chairperson, Nelson Adyera, says the district is cash strapped to assist the school in the middle of the rainy season. Rainfall disasters are widespread in the northern region since rains started last week.

A woman was struck dead in Amuru district and her house burnt to ashes by lightning. In Nwoya district, Anaka Hospital and several shops were affected by rain storms as well.
