At least Shillings 80 million was raised in cash and pledges at a fundraising drive for the construction of St. Joseph's Catholic Bukoba church and priest's residence in Kityerera sub-county in Mayuge district on Sunday. Key among those who attended the fundraising drive was the Bishop of Jinja Catholic Diocese, Charles Wamika, the Vice president, Jessica Alupo, and the 3rd Deputy Premier, Lukia Nakadama.
Alupo noted that it was exemplary for politicians to team up with religious leaders and the public to address community needs like the construction of churches and other places of worship. She also argued that raising children with religious values is key to their general upbringing, which is largely made easy through the availability of established places of worship within their communities.
On her part, Nakadama said that the fundraising drive was an opportunity of showcasing religious diversity where Muslims, Anglicans, and Pentecostals, among others, joined the drive towards the construction of a Catholic parish, adding that, such activities promote unity and rule out cases of radicalism.
Nakadama also noted that true leadership involves the mobilization of masses to directly participate in upgrading their social welfare and such fundraisers are a key aspect of driving mindset change amongst different sections of the public, to either emotionally or financially contribute towards the betterment of society.
The Bishop of Jinja diocese, Charles Wamika noted that such initiatives ease the role of church leaders towards ministering the gospel to the communities irrespective of their religious denominations. Bukoba parish church, which is expected to be fully constructed at an estimated cost of Shillings 400 million, will host 500 congregants per mass.
Jinja diocese also has plans for future expansion, where they hope to construct a primary school and vocational institution in Bukoba parish, aimed at improving literacy levels in the area.
