The National Environment Management Authority-NEMA has singled out Wakiso, Mukono, Jinja, Kayunga and Buikwe as the districts with the highest levels of water and air pollution and environmental degradation in the country.

NEMA attributes the problems to the high levels of urbanization and lack of adequate sensitisation and equipment for the technical teams to address the challenges.

As a result, NEMA has set up a four-year Real Convention Project managed by Simon Peter Acuu with funding from the World Bank to build the capacity of local government authorities in climate change, land degradation of biodiversity.

Acuu disclosed this while handing over equipment comprising laptop, camera, GPS locator and printer to Wakiso District Environment Officer, Esau Mpoza as part of the project plan to control the degradation of natural resources in the five districts before it is rolled out to other parts of the country.

Esau Mpoza, the Wakiso District Environment Officer, says illegal sand mining and pollution take the number one spot when it comes to environmental degradation in the district.

He says there is dire need to strengthen their performance and enforcement to ensure all those who want to get involved in sand mining secure the necessary approval.
