Wales, Fiji Stop Rugby Cranes

Uganda Rugby Cranes are out of the medal bracket after losing to Wales and giants Fiji in Group D matches at the on-going 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Uganda Rugby Cranes are out of the medal bracket after losing to Wales and giants Fiji in Group D matches at the on-going 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Wales stopped the Rugby Cranes 35-5 in the opening match played at the Robina Stadium. James Odongo scored the only try. In the second game defending champions Fiji humbled the Rugby Cranes 54-0.

In the third group game coach Tolbert Onyango's team made amends to beat Sri Lanka 33-10.

Danushika Wijekoon scored two tries for Sri Lanka who lost all their Group D matches, while James Odongo, Pius Ogena, Timothy Kisiga, Adrian Kasito and skipper Micheal Okorach all scored tries for Uganda Rugby Cranes.

Kenya who reached the finals of the Hong Kong 7s last weekend also failed to make it to the semi finals after qualified for the semi finals after winning 26-10 against Canada, 47-0 against Zambia and lost 40-7 to New Zealand.

England will now face New Zealand in the first semi final match on Sunday, before South Africa take on Fiji. Kenya will battle against Australia in a 5-8 classification match.

Earlier in the morning Uganda's Juliet Chekwel finished 4th in the 5,000m final with a season best time of 15:30.17. Kenya's Hellen Obiri won the race. Uganda's team in the women's 4x400m relay also finished in 5th place (3:35.03) in a race won by the Jamaica team. Uganda's relay team had Docus Ajok, Scovia Ayikoru, Halima Nakaayi, Winnie Nanyondo, Emily Nanziri and Leni Shida.

On Sunday Uganda will wait for three athletes Robert Chemonges, Alex Chesakit and Solomon Munyo Mutai to tussle it out in the men's marathon final.
