Wanted Omoro Man Found Dead in Gulu

A man from Omoro district who has been at large for killing his wife and six months old son has been found dead in Gulu municipality. The lifeless body of 27 year-old Vincent Onencan was found under a jack fruit tree in Negri Village in Bardege Division Gulu Municipality on Friday afternoon.

A case of suicide is being investigated by police in Gulu under DEF 05/2020. William Ocitti, the Ongako Sub County LC3 Chairperson, says that Onencan called his brother only identified as Odongpiny and notified him that he was going to commit suicide.    

According to Ocitti, Onencan reportedly told his bother that he was tired of life and had considered ending it. He says they intervened immediately and tried to trace for Onencan’s whereabouts but he declined to pick their repeated phone calls until when it emerged late that he was found dead.  

 

The deceased was the prime suspect in the murder of his wife, Prossy Apiyo and their son, Joshua Onencan.  The decomposing bodies of the two were found locked in their house in Oluba Village in Kal Parish Ongako Sub County on Thursday last week.

  

Betty Kilama, the Ongako Sub County Women Councilor, says the couple was battling problems until last Tuesday when Onencan`s wife was last seen.  On Thursday police and local authorities broke into Onencan`s house due to a stench and swarm of flies only to find the woman and her son dead inside.      

Pader police are also investigating another case of suicide in Pader district. It is alleged that Charles Awio, 69, from Kitenyi West Village in Otong Parish, Ogom Sub County was found dangling on the roof of his hut. 

Pius Charles Obonyo, an eyewitness says Awio was found dead shortly after returning from a drinking joint, where had threatened to end his life.  This is the tenth case of suicide recorded in Aswa region within three weeks. Okema attributes the rampant cases of suicide to domestic problems.

Police is now appealing to cultural, religious, political and opinion leaders to offer psychosocial support to people who present with suicidal tendencies.

Isaac Ogwal, a clinical psychologist at African Centre for Torture Victims (ACTV), a trauma healing center in Gulu explained that suicide minded people in some instances take the lives of their loved ones before ending their. 

Nicholas Opiyo, a Mental Health expert at Gulu Main Hospital, says that cases of suicide are alarming and challenging with over 629 attempted cases recorded annually in Acholi Sub Region.
