The West Buganda Region Muslim leadership has appointed a five-man delegation led by the Regional Kadhi Sheikh Juma Mawejje to engage the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Ramadhan Mubaje over the suspension of Sheik Buruhane Banguduse, the Kadhi Masaka Muslim District.

It comes a few days after the Mufti through Sheikh Muhammad Murshid Luwemba, the Religious Affairs Secretary at Uganda Muslim Supreme Council-UMSC wrote a letter suspending Sheikh Bagunduse pending investigations into allegations of nonperformance.

The letter February 19, 2021, indicated that the decision to suspend Bagunduse stemmed from a report of inefficiency reported to the office of the mufti by Masaka Muslim District council committee that sat on May 7, 2019.

“In the interim, you are instructed to hand over the office and all UMSC belongings including the vehicle registration number UAY 815A to Sheikh Wasajja Badru Uzair who will caretake the office on Friday 26th February 2021,” the letter partly reads.

However, Sheikh Umar Sserunjogi, the Information and Communication Secretary in West Buganda Muslim Region, says the regional leadership has noted that the suspension of Bagunduse and the appointment of Sheikh Kiruta to replace him was done out of the procedure. He says that in their meeting, they agreed that the council leadership should have consulted the regional leaderships to avoid such confusion.

According to Sserunjogi, the Masaka Muslim District council is also to the suspension of Kadhi in such a manner, saying that they have set up a five-member committee led by the Regional Kadhi to meet the Mufti to discuss the matter.

“We have instituted a committee led by the Regional kadhi and his secretary to meet the Mufti about the move to suspend the Kadhi. Muslims and the entire community should stay calm as we wait for what the committee will present after meeting with the mufti but for now,” he said.
