West Nile and Karamoja sub-regions have missed participation in an intensive week long Basketball coaching and officiating drills in Gulu district.

The regional training organized by the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association – FUBA aimed at improving coaching, officiating and playing skills of Basketball games in the region.

Only 25 referees drawn from the Acholi sub-region took part in the session which commenced on Saturday.

Joseph Sande Manano, the Vice President of the Technical and Competitions Committee FUBA says the training introduced unique skills that coaches and referees were never applying in the region.

He says the officials who attended the training are expected to utilize the skills in grooming young talents for national duties.

According to Manano, a similar training has taken place in South, Central, Eastern and Western Uganda in view of making Basketball a top sport for the country. He says it is unclear why West Nile and Karamoja absconded from the training after they were invited.

Paul Acaye, the Coach of Gulu Wheel Chair Basketball Club says he learned new basketball referee skills during the training. He says he was thrilled to understand techniques for boosting performance of players.

Mercy Claire, another referee from Gulu district says she never knew how to call foul, time-out or professionally manage a game.
