Wobulenzi Residents Protest Sale Of Health Centre Land

Some residents in Wobulenzi have protested the proposed sale of public health centre land by the town council.

In October last year, the Wobulenzi town council passed a resolution to sell the one acre piece of land that was gazetted for construction of a health centre in Kitante Zone. Council wanted the money to be used for the installation of piped water in the town.

The Wobulenzi LC 3 chairman Sebastian Ssebagala says that the council failed to raise money to install piped water yet it’s a challenge for residents in the area. He explains that they have decided to sell off the proposed health centre land to raise 56 million shillings to install water in the area to solve the problem and later look for more funds to buy land for the construction of the centre.

The proposed sale has, however, met protests from residents who are accusing the town clerk, Joseph Ssebudde and the chairman of killing the idea of a health centre.

Vincent Kyaligonza, a resident of Wobulenzi says that the area lacks health centres and wants the council to lobby the ministry of health to construct one in the area instead of selling the land.

He explains that his son died last year as he was trying to take him to a hospital which is located far from the council. He insists that council can use local revenue to build more boreholes than starting a mega project of piped water.

Another resident, Goeffrey Guyidde accuses the town council of not consulting the residents before starting to sell community land under what he called dubious deals.

Guyidde accuses Ssebagala of allegedly getting a bribe from Ebenezer Church which wants to buy the land. Ssebagala, however, denies the claim.

The residents have vowed to demonstrate until the chairman abandons the idea. They want the Luweero chief administrative officer, Christopher Kyomya, to investigate him for getting a bribe to sell off the land.
