Woman Arrested for Killing Own Newborn Baby in Nwoya

Apiyo's relatives became suspicious when she returned home with no child and no pregnancy. However, she declined to respond to any of the queries raised by her family members, until the pressure was mounted on her prompting her to confess to killing the baby.

Police in Nwoya is holding a 20-year-old woman for allegedly killing her own newborn baby. Jackeline Apiyo, a resident of Pawatomeru Parish, Purongo Sub –County in Nwoya district reportedly committed the offence on Saturday, July 11.

Ben Okot, the Chairman of Purongo Sub –County in Nwoya district told URN in an interview that Apiyo who was eight months pregnant went to the bush and aborted the baby after drinking local herbs and later smashed its head using a stone before covering the dead body with leaves.

Apiyo's relatives became suspicious when she returned home with no child and no pregnancy. However, she declined to respond to any of the queries raised by her family members, until the pressure was mounted on her prompting her to confess to killing the baby.

Okot adds that Apiyo was taken to Purongo Health Centre III for post-abortion care since she was bleeding and feeling severer pain in her abdomen.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson says that the body of the baby was retrieved from the bush and taken to Anaka Hospital Mortuary for post –mortem. He says that the police are closely monitoring  Apiyo who is likely to face charges of murder upon recovery.  

Two weeks ago, a 17-year-old mother threw her one-year-old baby in Aringa River, in Pacua village, Mucwini Sub County, Kitgum district, after the father failed to provide for them.  She had hoped that the corpse would be washed away by running water.
