Police at Kalisizo in Rakai District have arrested a woman who has been on run for strangling her 2 year old step son.

Sarah Nantongo, a resident of Kakooma Village, Kalisizo Rural Sub County in Rakai District, was wanted for killing her co wife’s two year old child indentified as Mayanja.

Nantongo was arrested by boda boda cyclists at Kakooma village who later handed her over to police two days after she committed the offence and went into hiding.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased’s mother Margret Najjingo taken her son to his father’s home on Thursday last week.

Najjingo claimed that she wanted financial support from the boy's father Bulonge Ndawula. Ndawula had abandoned them in a house at Kabiira village some miles away from his second home.

Nantongo is reported to have quarrelled bitterly with Ndawula over the child's presence in their home.

Kakooma Village Chairperson, Patrick Kabuye said Nantongo’s arrest meant justice would be served. He said that he had received reports that prior to strangling the child; Nantongo had on several occasions tortured the minor though he had just spent three days at her home.

The Officer in-charge of Criminal Investigations at Kalisizo Police station Frank Hangane said that police had worked closely with residents to track down Nantongo.

Hangane added that Nantongo's husband Ndawula might be released in order to testify against her as a state witness.

He said Nantongo might face murder and child torture charges.
