Police in Arua is again investigating circumstances under which a 19 year old woman from Ishoko village in Ayivuni Sub County Arua district delivered and abandoned her baby in the bush in on Saturday.

Florence Amania was arrested shortly on the same day after a baby girl she delivered was discovered in the bush crying by a woman who had gone to collect fire wood.

According to Lillian Dravuru, the officer in charge of child and family protection unit Arua, after delivering in the bush successfully, Amania decided to cover the baby with grass and left it in the bush.

Dravuru explained that Amania got married to a man in Madi but unfortunately the man passed away in February this year leaving her with the pregnancy.

The baby was discovered by Clara Drozia who had gone to collect fire wood and later rushed to Adumi health centre where health workers gave her first aid to save her life.

According to Dravuru, after committing the offense, Amania ran and hid herself at Kova Primary School where she was later found by residents and brought to Ayivuni police post.

Dravuru says Amania was charged of attempted murder and child abuse and later released on police bond to enable her get treatment because she was still bleeding. She was also reunited with her baby as the police in Arua don’t have a reception centre for keeping such people.

Dravuru noted that Amania is expected to report back to police after recovering, as they prepare to produce her in court to answer her charges. The case has been registered under Arua SD REF 08/13/10/2012.

In her statement Amania claimed that she couldn’t take care of the baby since the father had died and that the only option was to leave it in the bush for it to die.

On Friday October 12, 2012, police arrested Sarah Driciru, 23, a resident of Awindiri village, Oluko sub -county in Arua district for killing her newly born baby by throwing the baby it into a pit latrine. She claimed she had been abandoned by the father of the child.
