Unknown people have hacked to death an elderly woman in Kitgum district over a land dispute.

Helen Aculu was reportedly killed on Thursday by the assailants in Omwony Bul West Village in Lamola parish, Labonga Amida Sub County.

Her body bearing deep cuts on the head and hands was found on Friday morning by locals in the area.

Wilson Nyeko, the Labonga Amida Sub-county LCIII Chairperson says that the deceased was waylaid and killed after visiting the disputed land.

He says the deceased had been having a land dispute with her in-laws.

“We got reports that the deceased visited the land yesterday with police officers she brought from Kitgum Police station. The police officers left the land before she could and while on her way back to her home, she was waylaid and killed,” says Nyeko.

Nyeko says police detectives were dispatched this morning to the crime scene along with a sniffer dog to trace for the assailants.

Kitgum resident District Commissioner William Komakech says the deceased had on two occasions won court cases for the land both in Gulu and Kitgum Magistrates court but notes that her in-laws never wanted to respect the decisions.

He notes that investigation into the murder has commenced while the culprits are being sought for.
