An elephant has attacked and killed a 23-year-old woman in Kaabong District.
Lokol Betty, a resident of Lokiyekes village in Lolelia
sub-county was attacked by an elephant that had strayed from Kidepo National Park, while she was going to her garden on Tuesday.
She was heard sounding an alarm moments later, but it was, too late to rescue her from the elephant.
Residents tipped the anti-stock theft unit police officers attached
to the Nakatapan ASTU detachment who responded and dispersed the elephant.
Yudaya Mugoya, the Kaabong District Police Commander said that Uganda Wildlife Authority-UWA has been
informed while relevant statements were recorded from leaders and
relatives.
Meanwhile, the Government has started compensating
smallholder farmers whose crops were destroyed by stray elephants and buffalos
from Kidepo Valley National Game Park.
Robert Muhabwe, the Chief Warden of Kidepo Valley National
Game Park said that the government is processing the compensation program for
the farmers who lost the crops.
Muhabwe said that thirteen beneficiaries have already been
listed for compensation that will start from Karenga district.
He added that the government
has promised to embark on fencing the Kidepo National Game to avoid repeated
incidents of wildlife escaping from the park to destroy people's gardens.
In another incident, Patrick Lokol, a resident of Didit village in Lobalangit sub-County, Karenga district died after he was attacked by a buffalo.
Lokol had gone with his brothers to pluck okra in their garden and fetch some fibre for building.
