Workers Election Halted in Mbarara City over Suspicious Register

The election that had started smoothly later caused chaos after a new register was found on the polling table and the polling officials couldn't explain its source.

The elections of workers representatives to Mbarara City Council were halted after another voters' register was discovered.

The election that had started smoothly later caused chaos after the register was found on the polling table and the polling officials couldn't explain where it was from. The voters' register which had no photos of the voters was discovered by candidates’ agents.

Ben Patrick Twahirwa, one of the candidate says that he was surprised to find that there was another register being used without the consultation of the candidates. He notes that they will object to the outcome of the elections.

The Mbarara City returning officer Violent Atuhurira was forced to halt the voting for more than five hours.  Atuhurira says that the register was from the trade unions.

However, voting resumed after the candidates and their agents agreed to disregard the new register.
