At least 12 workers of Modern Steel factory in Njeru municipality in Buikwe district are accusing management of expelling them for demanding for a pay rise and refusing to sign contracts they don't understand.

The affected workers explain that management promised to give them a 5 percent pay rise starting the month of August when they laid down their tools a few weeks ago.

However, the workers say they were shocked to receive their pay on Saturday using the old rate. This prompted them to confront their Asian managers to explain their failure to give them a pay rise as agreed. On Monday, the workers resumed their sit down strike and vowed not to resume until they get a pay rise.

Alex Kayanja, one of the affected workers, says to their surprise the managers expelled some of the workers who led their colleagues to demand for a pay rise. According to Kayanja, they refused to sign the contracts because they were never given chance to read it.
