The Central Organisation of Free Trade Unions - Uganda (COFTU) has demanded for an independent Labour Ministry.

The COFTU Chairman General, Christopher Kahirita made the request on behalf of the worker's union this afternoon during the international Labour Day celebrations held in Pallisa district.

Workers are currently under the Gender, Labour and Social Development Ministry. However, the Labour issues are handled by the State Minister for labor.

Laborers had an independent Ministry during the first cabinet of president, Yoweri Museveni under, Hajj Jaberi Bidandi Ssali. Speaking at the same event, Kahirita called for the improvement of the minimum wage.

Wilson Owere, the chairman of National Organisation of Trade Unions (NOTU), says that Ugandan workers have for long endured exploitation and badly needed a policy on minimum wage.

In 2013, Workers Member of Parliament Arinaitwe Rwakajara sought leave from parliament to table the Minimum Wage Bill. The bill is awaiting the second reading in parliament.

In the past, President Yoweri Museveni has cautioned trade unions against intimidating investors by pushing for the introduction of wage bill.

He on the contrary wants unions to encourage more investment to create more employment opportunities.
