Youth activists in Uganda have entered into partnership with the US embassy to preach peace among the electorates especially youth, ahead of the February general elections.

The campaign dubbed “I pledge peace 2016” aims at bringing together different youth groups to preach peace and desist from engaging in acts of violence.

Cyrus Kawalya, the President Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) says they decided to start the campaign to counter acts of electoral violence involving youth militias in the recent past.

The campaign targets mainly districts of Mukono, Ntungamo, Kampala, Kabarole among others where violence has been evident.

However, some of the youths who were in attendance at the launch of the campaign at Hotel Africana say that preaching peace might give the ruling NRM government advantage to compromise voters.

Bishop Zac Niringiye believes that talking to the youth is not enough. He wants organisations that wish Uganda peaceful elections to consider sponsoring activists who will take to the streets in case of vote rigging.

One of the prominent militia groups is the dreaded Kalangala Action Plan, which is led by Major Roland Kakooza, a senior Presidential Advisor on Political Affairs. Kalangala Action Plan has been cited in past incidents of electoral violence.

Opposition groups have also started different groups such as FDC\'s Power 10 (P10) and Mubarak Munyagwa\'s Red Top among others.
